Is GeM Portal Genuine? An Honest Verification Guide
Is GeM portal genuine? Yes, it is. It is owned by the Government of India, operated by GeM SPV under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and it runs at one address only: gem.gov.in. What is not genuine is the crowd of lookalike websites, WhatsApp job offers and phone calls that use the GeM name. This page gives you four checks that settle whether a site is real, the patterns that fake sites share, and what to do if you have already paid one.
Including this one. gemportal.com.in/ is a private information site, not a government website. We take no documents, charge nothing and offer no registration service. Apply the four checks below to us as readily as to anyone else.

Is GeM portal genuine: four checks that settle it
1. Look at the domain, not the design
The official portal ends in gem.gov.in. A gov.in address cannot be bought by a private company, which makes it the one signal that cannot be faked. Sites ending in .co.in, .net, .org or .com are private, however official the logo looks.
2. Look for a payment form
Registration on GeM is free. If a page asks for money before it gives you information, it is selling a service. That is legal when disclosed, and it is not the government. The real cost picture is on our registration fees page.
3. Nobody legitimate asks for your password or OTP
Not GeM staff, not a helpdesk, not a consultant. Anyone who asks is trying to take control of your account, and the damage that follows is covered on our account recovery page.
4. Read the footer
Private sites are required to disclose that they are private. Many do, in small grey text at the bottom. If the disclosure is missing entirely, close the tab.
If a site is not genuine, these patterns give it away
- A domain built from the words gem, portal, registration and India in some order.
- The word helpline next to a mobile number rather than a landline.
- A single form asking for PAN, Aadhaar, GST and bank details together.
- Urgency language such as limited slots or apply today.
- Payment by UPI to a personal ID.
- No company name, no address, no grievance contact.
The tell that matters most. A genuine private consultancy says plainly that it is private and that its fee is a service charge. A fraudulent one tries to make you believe it is the government. The first is a business decision. The second is a warning.
The three scams that make people ask is GeM portal genuine
Paid registration for a free service
The most common one. You pay for something you could have done yourself in half an hour using our registration steps.
Fake data entry and work from home jobs
Messages promising GeM data entry work, then asking for a registration or training fee. GeM does not recruit through WhatsApp forwards, and no genuine employer asks a candidate to pay.
Fake support calls
Someone calls about your pending order or blocked account and asks for an OTP to fix it. Hang up. Real support runs through tickets, and the correct escalation path is described on our customer care page.
What to do if you have already paid or shared documents
- Log in to your GeM account and change the password immediately.
- Check whether the registered mobile number and email are still yours. If they have been changed, treat it as urgent.
- Review secondary users and remove anyone you do not recognise.
- Keep the payment receipt, the website address and any chat messages.
- Report it through the national cybercrime channel and inform your bank if account details were shared.
Is GeM portal genuine for sellers, and is it worth the effort?
Two different questions hide inside one search. The first is whether the platform is real, and it is. The second is whether it is worth your time, which depends on your category. Reddit threads calling GeM a scam usually turn out to be about payment delay or catalogue rejection rather than fraud, and both are real complaints about a real platform rather than evidence of a fake one.
What genuine sellers complain about
- Payment arriving weeks after delivery because the acceptance step stalled.
- Catalogue entries rejected over one parameter mismatch.
- Reverse auctions pushing prices below what a small firm can sustain.
- Support tickets that take longer than expected.
These are operating frustrations, and they are covered honestly in the payment and rejection sections of our tender guide. They are not signs that gem.gov.in is fraudulent.
What actual fraud around GeM looks like
- A website charging for registration that is free.
- A caller asking for an OTP to unblock your account.
- A job offer that requires you to pay a fee first.
- An agent who keeps your password and then holds the account hostage.
Is GeM portal genuine for buyers too?
Yes, and for government officers the question rarely comes up, because access arrives through the department. The risk on the buyer side is different: officers receiving calls from people claiming to represent GeM, asking for login help. The same rule applies. Nobody legitimate asks for credentials. If a caller has details about a live order, that is not proof of authenticity, because bid information is public.
A one minute test you can apply to any website
- Read the domain. Does it end in gem.gov.in? If not, it is private.
- Scroll to the footer. Is there a plain statement of who runs the site?
- Look for a price. Is money being asked for before information is given?
- Check what is being collected. Does one form want PAN, Aadhaar, GST and bank details together?
- Search the phone number. Does it belong to a company or to an individual?
Apply the same five questions to this site and you will find the answers in our disclaimer and on our contact and support page. A site that cannot survive its own test does not deserve your documents.
